Welcome to the study guide for These Days are Dark. [personal profile] bessyboo and I have been working on this vid for about nine months, and I really hope that you take something from it. We covered forty different events in the flashback sequence, and I wanted to have a companion post detailing the historical significance of what we covered, or at least a brief overview.

A couple of quick notes before I launch into history: as we were doing research and narrowing the field for what to include, we came up with three loose criteria for what to include:
1) The event in question had to be America-centric. (This meant no fall of the Berlin Wall, no VE or VJ Day, and that we tried to ensure any footage from contemporary marches were from the United States, and not more easily-accessible footage overseas).
2) We wanted to keep things on political movements and victories, as opposed to broader cultural discussions and changes. (We toyed with including footage from Woodstock, the beginnings of the counterculture movement, beatniks, and the like - but in the end, they weren't quite political enough).
3) Whenever possible, we wanted to focus on the movement and actions of everyday citizens, rather than the decrees and machinations of politicians. I admit that this isn't always reflected in the writeups below, especially with Supreme Court cases.

Thanks so much for watching, and again - keep fighting. We're all in this together.

”But I am the Doctor!”
“No, Doctor, I am the Doctor.”
“You may be a Doctor, but I am the Doctor. The definite article, you might say!”
--The Doctor and Harry Sullivan, ‘Robot’

Alright. So, at first glance, it seems that it’s just a very telling insight into the Doctor’s character—especially important as this is Tom Baker’s first episode. He doesn’t listen to authority, he’s incredibly arrogant, and he’s ungodly cheerful.

But. But.

‘The definite article, you might say.’

What’s a definite article? An article is a grammatical term for a word that, when used, indicates the type of reference made to a noun: A banana, or an orchestra.

A definite article refers to a specific noun. It’s not a banana, it’s the banana; it’s not an orchestra; it’s the orchestra.

He’s not a Doctor, he’s the Doctor.

How the fuck did I miss this; I’ve been quoting this for two and a half years.

Why is Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 so fucking complicated?

Why do I always focus on creating an interesting character, instead of making somebody I can fucking play in the system?

Rokugan is easy. Deadlands is easy. Tales from the Wood is easy.

Fuck you, DnD 3.5

Dear Hobbit movie,

Are you trying to have the highest density of 'Graham's Favorite Actors' ever? Because you're doing a pretty good job of it.

First you had the returning fellows from Lord of the Rings, like the fantastic Ian McKellen. Then you decided to cast Martin Freeman as Bilbo, along with Sylvester McCoy as Radagast the Brown. And that was good.

And now you have Stephen Fry as the Master of Lake-town.

And now you have Benedict Cumberbatch as...somebody.

Keep up the good work,

New computer! Her name is Pepper, and she is very sleek and pretty, and she does whatever I need her to do, and she makes sure that I'm organized, and it's all so very nice.

(It's a Dell Inspiron for those who are actually interested).

Also, heads up for people: There's an up-and-coming tech support hotline-thing called iYogi. They've been getting a lot of attention lately for being able to solve 'any and all' problems that a computer has. In a fit of desperation (this was during my near-mental breakdown, look a few months back), I wound up purchasing a subscription to them. They're...well, I won't say that they're bad, I suppose, just super inconsistent. Like, one time, they got a virus off my computer easy as could be. A couple weeks ago, though, when I called them for help again? The virus returned the next day, and they had removed my antivirus software. So, all in all? Don't go with them. They're just not reliable enough.

But that's all in the past, 'cause I have a new computer and things are awesome and Shakespeare is cool and this computer doesn't have three/four years of shit on it. So that's cool. [/understatement]

So, not only is my computer on the slow side to death (third fuckterrible virus this year; I'd be surprised it lived another two months), but my Kindle randomly died today. Like, the screen fucked up beyond recognition.

If anybody needs me, I'll be trying to reconfigure settings on my computer. Step one: Knowing what settings were changed, apart from 'this font is different' or 'these pictures won't load.' Step two: Finding out what to fucking do.

Step three: Buy a new computer.

So, I turned twenty-one, finished the semester, and upgraded to a paid account on livejournal. Yay!

In celebration, I'm going to start a meme! Hopefully this will catch on. Maybe it won't. The meme is simple, you copy/paste the following questions and answer them.

What is your favorite thing to cook? How do you cook it? Are there any particularly interesting stories about cooking it--the first time, a large disaster, a great success?

There's a lot of foods I love making. My family's Alfredo sauce recipe is super easy and super delicious. I can make a mean baked brie, with cranberry sauce, roasted almonds, and a pastry shell. But overall, I'm going to have to go with my Jambalaya recipe.

Jambalaya: Damn Tasty )

Or, Why I'm a Character in a Russian Comedy )

I think that this is proof that I am, in fact, a fictional character. Unfortunately, the authorship seems to have shifted from Stephen Moffatt or the staff at Glee to Anton Fucking Chekov.
queelez: Malcolm Reynolds is shooting you. (bang)
So, I had the rather bizarre experience tonight of speaking with a bot on AIM. Why is this out of the ordinary?

Because said bot was IMing me twice. On the same screenname of mine. With the same screen name of theirs. Advertising two different things.

Nicholas Courtney has passed away.

While I've only seem a handful of Doctor Who episodes with Courtney/the Brigadier, he was a classy gentleman, a hardened badass, and perhaps the very epitome of the 'stiff upper lip.'

From what I hear, the actor was polite to fans of all ages, as well as his co-workers.

A Northland alumni, a previous Northland Dean, and a classy, classy actor. This has not been a good week.

Contrary to popular belief, 'Queelez' did not derive from 'Queen Lesbian.' Instead, it came from an old MMORPG I played with in fifth grade, 'Dragon Court.' I had a couple of names, all beginning with 'Qu,' containing at least one 'e,' and ending in 'z.' I could have been 'Queenz' or Quegez,' but 'Queelez' wound up the best game, and the name stuck.

'Queen Lesbian' came along when a couple members of a forum I went to (maggiekarp and K-chan Zeal) joked that I was, well, the Queen Lesbian.

Well, it seems that I'm directing a play. Again.

We're doing 'Twelve Angry Men,' or 'Twelve Angry Jurors,' depending on how PC we want to be.

Looks like I get to buy another hip flask.

(Personally, I was really, really hoping for the Tempest. Maybe next year).

[livejournal.com profile] paladine recently posted a clip of one of his favorite moments of "cinematic joy." It's a pretty fantastic idea, so I lovingly steal from him. Behold, one of my favorite romantic moments in all of film:

The 'Define Dancing' scene from WALL-E remains, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful moments in animation. The music, the mood, the atmosphere--it's perfect. It's really just perfect. You can see the various relationships and loves starting: WALL-E and EVE's first kiss. The humans (Mary and John) meeting. The Captain re-discovering Earth, and his pursuit for more knowledge.

I'm sorry, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Up. This is my favorite Pixar movie, by far.

So, yeah. That's what I did tonight.

So, Proposition 8 has been overturned. It is, as scientists say, fucking awesome.

I'm happy that we've overcome this obstacle, and am most definitely hoping that we can continue to surpass the following ones, until queer folks everywhere have equal rights.

A part of me is wondering that, now it's overturned...

Can we get a sequel to that old Prop 8 musical?

So, we all get prerecorded messages from various companies wanting money. (If I get one more phone call from 'Rachel at Card Holder Services,' I might smack a bitch).

Lately, though, I've been getting a (relatively) large number of calls... asking if I'm discriminated against because I have diabetes.

So, um. Do people get discriminated against due to diabetes? Because honestly, that sounds more like a South Park episode than anything else.

Now that I’ve gotten over most of the post-convention buzz, it’s high time to write about it. Done in bits and pieces, of whatever I deem proper to organize it as.

Okay, so, CONvergence? Was awesome. Awesome. I will be writing up a larger post about it over the next day or so, when I'm not jerking back and forth between tired, hungry, and mostly insane. Instead, I will say: I honestly ship the Doctor and the Master like the fucking Mayflower, and I very much want to play (or at least watch) cricket. Paul Cornell is an adorkable sweetheart, and I think the term 'Mary Sue' needs to die, quickly.

I also want to say that this was me. I was the Master. If any people who I befriended at CON (and I know you're out there!) see this, please post with a basic who you were. Names are good, how we met/cosplay you did is better.
